How the puzzle is built

The daily Jumble gives you four scrambled words — typically two of five letters and two of six, though the mix varies — each of which unscrambles to exactly one common word. Certain letters in each answer sit in circles. Collect those, and they form a second, longer scramble whose answer completes a pun in the cartoon caption.

That two-stage structure is why this solver enforces the strict rule: every letter must be used. A Jumble answer never drops a letter, so results that use only some of them would be noise.

The caption is the hard part

The individual words rarely stall anyone for long. The caption usually does, for two reasons: the letter set is longer, and the answer is often a phrase of two or three words rather than one. This tool searches single dictionary words, so it will crack a one-word caption and come up empty on a multi-word one.

When that happens, the cartoon is doing more work than it looks like it is. The drawing and the setup line almost always telegraph the subject, and the answer is a pun on it — so read the picture first, guess the shape of the phrase, then check whether your letters support it.

If nothing comes back

Almost always a typo. Recount the letters against the printed boxes — transposing two of them changes nothing, but dropping or adding one changes everything. If the letters are definitely right and the answer is still missing, the puzzle has used a word ENABLE does not carry, which happens occasionally with proper nouns and very informal words.
