Browsing versus searching

These lists are for when you want to see the whole field — every five-letter word ending in Y, laid out so you can scan it. That is a genuinely different job from filtering, and it is the one a search box does badly.

When you already know several constraints at once, search instead. The Word Finder takes a length, a start, an end and a contained pattern together, and the crossword solver takes the exact shape of the answer. Either will get you to a handful of candidates faster than any list can.

What the counts mean

Every number on these pages is counted from the same public-domain lexicon at build time — nothing is estimated. Where a list is too long to print in full, the page shows a preview per group and links to the focused page, but the totals are always the real totals.

The lexicon holds common English words and their inflected forms. It has no proper nouns, no abbreviations, no brand names and nothing coined in the last few years, which is worth knowing before you conclude a word is missing in error.
