Data & method notes
Counts come from a vowel-group heuristic with adjustments for silent endings. It is an estimate: irregular spellings and proper nouns may be off by a syllable. See the methodology page for the exact rules and limitations.
Frequently asked questions
How accurate is the syllable count?
It uses a solid rule-of-thumb that is right for most common words, but English spelling is irregular, so unusual words and names can be off by one. Treat it as a close estimate.
