Data & method notes

Words are split on whitespace; sentences on terminal punctuation; paragraphs on blank lines. These simple rules match everyday writing well but, like any counter, can miscount unusual formatting. See the methodology page.

Frequently asked questions

Does the word counter update as I type?

Yes. Every count refreshes instantly as you type or paste, with nothing sent to a server.

How is reading time calculated?

From an average adult reading speed of about 200 words per minute. It is a rough estimate, rounded up to the nearest minute.

What counts as a sentence?

A run of text ending in a period, question mark, or exclamation mark. Abbreviations and decimals can occasionally be miscounted, as with any simple counter.

Is my text private?

Completely. The counter runs in your browser and your text is never uploaded or stored on a server.
