Scrambles versus word searches

They test different things, and it is worth choosing deliberately. A word search is recognition: the correct spelling is on the page and the pupil has to spot it. A scramble is recall: the letters are there but the order is not, so the pupil has to already know how the word is built.

That makes a scramble the harder of the two for the same list, and a better fit for revision than for first contact with new vocabulary.

Choosing words

Four to eight letters works best. Three-letter words have too few arrangements to be a puzzle; anything past nine becomes an exercise in patience rather than spelling.

Watch for words whose letters spell something else — listen and silent, stressed and desserts. A pupil who writes the other valid word is not wrong about spelling, and marking it as an error teaches the wrong lesson. If you are unsure, run the list through the anagram solver first.

Printing

The print layout drops the site navigation and controls, sizes the sheet for a portrait page, and puts the answer key on its own sheet so you can print page one for the class and keep page two.

Common questions

Will a scramble ever come out as the original word?
No. The scrambler re-shuffles until the result differs from the input, so a pupil never gets a "puzzle" that is already solved. Two-letter words are the exception — there is only one other arrangement, and it always differs.
Can I reproduce the same worksheet later?
Yes. Each sheet carries a seed; enter it again and you get exactly the same scrambles. Worth noting down if you are printing for several classes on different days.
Should I include a hint?
For younger pupils, yes — the first-letter hint turns an unsolvable puzzle into a solvable one and keeps the focus on spelling rather than on guessing. Turn it off for revision.
How many words per sheet?
Ten to fifteen is a comfortable single page. Twenty fits in two columns. Past that it prints across two sheets, which is fine but harder to mark.
Is my list saved anywhere?
No. Everything runs in your browser and nothing is uploaded. Print before you close the tab.
